The Green Deal

What is the Green Deal?
According to the DECC, the Green Deal is “a framework to enable private firms to offer consumers energy efficiency improvements to their homes, community spaces and businesses at no upfront cost, and to recoup payments through a charge in instalments on the energy bill.”

In other words, it is essentially a loan. The cost of the improvements is to be recovered through instalments on the energy bill (likely over several years). This is different from a personal loan in that you are not obligated to continue paying if you move house.

Where can I find out more?
The Department of Energy and Climate Change website is a great place to get started.

You can also find a Summary of the Government’s Proposals here (.pdf)

Finally, the Green Deal Guide is another useful site for the most up-to-date information on the status of the scheme.
