It’s that time of year when many people start thinking about spring cleaning and home improvement. You might even be considering trying your own hand at a few renovations. Be warned – what you may think is a simple task can all too easily turn into a DIY Disaster!

BBC Oxford’s Jo Thoenes recently spoke to MyHammer UK and Cowboy Builders personality, John Russell about the dangers of DIY.

Russell surmises that many folks undertake DIY tasks for three reasons: to save money, to garner a bit of personal prestige, or perhaps as a bit of therapy. He points out that there are much safer, less expensive alternatives and unless you’re a pro, DIY is not the way to go!

Dealing with anything gas, electric or water-related is a definite no-no, but even tasks such as building a garden wall are better left to those with the tools and qualifications to get it done right. Even a seemingly minor task, such as shelf-hanging can go very wrong in a hurry. Russell is regularly called in to clean up after DIYs gone wrong. His advice – unless you’re a professional, stay clear!
