Need Help Moving House?

Moving house or flat can be a pretty stressful experience. Once you’ve navigated the administrative minefield of organising your new abode, there are the actual logistics of moving yourself and your possessions to your new home. We’ve compiled a brief outline of the various things to remember when you do move, in the hope of making everything just that little bit easier.

One of the first things to consider is how you are going to move. If you are moving flats and do not have that much furniture and belongings, it may be cheaper and easier to do it without a removal company. You can either hire a van or hire a man with a van. If you choose van hire, it is important to get as many people as possible to help you. The process of transferring items, some of which might be very heavy, from the apartment to the street can be labour intensive and many hands make work easier. The one advantage of a man in a van is that they can help you carry items. Check first that they do not mind doing this, though.

It’s important to take stock of how much you need to move because it will impact the size of the van that you might need. If it’s too small you may have to do several journeys, which will increase the time and potential cost. If it’s too big you may have trouble parking or getting the van near your new home. It’s also worth checking whether or not there are different rates for week versus weekend hire. Many van hire companies have special two day rates over the weekend.

If you have a lot of possessions then the best bet is probably to call in the professionals. They can ease much of the stress associated with moving and can help get the job done efficiently and quickly. Some removal companies offer packaging services too; consider whether or not you want help with that. If you do hire professional movers, make sure you do this well in advance. We advise getting multiple quotes before choosing a company and we also advise ensuring that they are a member of the British Association of Removers. We also strongly advise checking the small print of any moving insurance, as some contracts have clauses which mean they are only liable for breakages claimed within a certain time period after the move. Thereafter, they cannot be held liable and as it can often take weeks to fully unpack everything, considering this could be very important. You should also make a list of all the possessions and cross check everything after the move. Some items you may not use very often and as such you may overlook them if they get left behind or lost in transit.

There are also a number of things that the removal company will need to know in order to be able to provide a good service. Firstly, consider letting them know how much of what furniture you are moving. This will allow them to accurately gauge what size van/removal van and how many they will need. How many boxes are there? Where is the new house/flat and how do they get there? Make sure they either have a map or the necessary information if they are going to use Satellite Navigation. At what time do you want to arrive? Have you organised parking space/permits for the van? It can help if you provide a plan of exactly where you want your furniture to go, too, as well as making arrangements if furniture is too big to go through the door.
