Plaster can be quite brittle and a sudden shock with a hard implement can create holes. Plasterboard is also very thin. It is essentially hardened plaster between 2 sheets of paper. The following tips will help you repair minor holes yourself. If you aren’t very good at DIY or would rather spend your time doing something else then we suggest you find a local plasterer. MyHammer can get you multiple quotes from plasterers near you and they are rated by other customers.
To repair plaster where there is a dent or chunk missing you will need the following:
* Filler
* A paint brush
* A brush
* A plastering trowel
* Fine sandpaper
First of all you need to prepare the dent for repair by removing any debris. You can use a chisel to go around the hole removing any loose plaster and use a brush to remove all residual dust or dirt. Once you have done this, use the paint brush and paint a small amount of water in and around the hole. What you often find with old plaster is that it is very dry and will draw moisture from your filler. If this happens, the filler will crumble and crack. Now take your plastering trowel and apply the filler to the hole by moving the trowel over the hole and try to leave a smooth finish on the filler. It doesn’t have to be perfect, as you will sand it down when it’s dried. If the hole is particulary deep you may have to apply a second helping of filler. If this is the case, score the plaster before it dries. This will create a surface to which the second application of filler will stick.
Once the plaster has dried (you should check the manufacturer’s instructions for this) you can use the sand paper to sand the rough surface so that it is smooth and flush with the wall surface. The surface is then ready for painting if you should wish to do so.
