While supply and use of asbestos has been banned in the UK, any building constructed before 2000 may contain asbestos materials. Left undisturbed, it doesn’t pose a problem. If disturbed, fibres are released. If inhaled, they can cause serious (potentially fatal) illnesses. According to the HSE, more than 2000 people have died of asbestos-causing mesothelioma in the UK since 2010.

The best thing you can do as either a homeowner or tradesperson is to be asbestos aware!

Asbestos is a material many associate with older buildings, though its use as a construction material was only finally banned in 1999, meaning it can still be found in many modern buildings. Although relatively harmless if undisturbed, carrying out works can easily disrupt asbestos, causing the release of spores into the atmosphere, meaning a serious danger to health. Those living in houses and working in offices where asbestos is present will often be at little risk: instead it’s the tradesmen and construction workers whose life is in danger.
